A piece I did exploring Social (graphic) Design is posted over at Brute Labs. However, if you don’t want to read the whole thing, here’s the most important bit:
By labeling these kinds of efforts as part of an emerging field called “social design”, one that increasingly requires a Master’s degree, do we risk deterring “non-social designers” from pursuing similar efforts? By lumping the diverse approaches by graphic designers, architects, artists, computer developers etc… towards social good into a single “job” are we fostering an oxymoronic profession; a specialized jack-of-all-trades? Furthermore, in a world where the “triple bottom line” is rightly gaining momentum and the “greater good” is recognized as the common good, could the term “social design” be an oversimplification of young creatives working towards the future that requires collaboration and optimism?

Recently, I had the opportunity to design the annual Center for Urban Pedagogy benefit invite. Free drinks and an awesome acronym was all it took to inspire me on this one…
I have been a fan of their Making Policy Public series for awhile and so this project was a dream come true. If you are in the Brooklyn area, definitely come to the party. If you are unfamiliar with CUP, check out their website!
